Ways to Prepare for Hernia Surgery

Hernia surgery in ChicagoHernias do not resolve on their own. Over time, the protrusion worsens and becomes more painful. Prompt surgical repair is recommended. Top surgeon Dr. Gregory Dumanian of Northwestern Plastic Surgery discusses what to do in preparation for hernia surgery.

Stop Smoking

If you smoke, quit. Smoking significantly increases the risk of hernia surgery complications. Stop smoking at least four to six weeks prior to the surgery.

Take Time Off Work

Arrange to take the appropriate time off work during recuperation. The surgeon will let you know how much time to request, although the time necessary may change based on healing and the difficulty of the hernia operation.  An umbilical hernia will require less recovery time than a full abdominal wall exploration.

Stop Taking Blood Thinners

Patients must stop taking blood thinners, including aspirin, at least one week prior to surgery. Besides prescription blood thinners and aspirin, other medications or supplements that thin the blood include:

  • Fish oil
  • Echinacea
  • Gingko biloba
  • Ginseng
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Vitamin E

Blood thinners are not the only medication or supplement you should stop taking prior to surgery. Do not use St. John’s Wort or dietary supplements. Tell your doctor about all of the medications and supplements you take, whether prescribed or over-the-counter.

Pick Up Pain Medication

Expect some post-surgical pain. The doctor will write a prescription for pain medication prior to surgery. Pick it up or arrange for pick-up or delivery so that it is there when you come home.

Take a Shower

Take a shower and cleanse yourself with regular soap and water either the morning of the surgery or the night before. This lessens the risk of infection.

No Food or Drink

Do not consume any food or drink after midnight before the surgery. If there are medications you must take, consult your doctor about taking them with a small sip of water.

The doctor may want you to stick to liquids only the day before the surgery and take a laxative. Empty bowels can make the hernia surgery proceed more easily.

Have Someone Take You Home

You cannot drive after hernia surgery. Make arrangements to have someone take you home.

Arrange for Help After Surgery

Depending on the size of the hernia and extent of the surgery, recovery may take weeks or months. During that time, you cannot lift even moderately heavy objects. Arrange for meal preparation, housekeeping and child or pet care. Stock your freezer and cupboard with prepared meals. Because you will be unable to lift a large bag of groceries for months, develop an alternate shopping plan. If you have to go on a trip, use smaller suitcases.
