The placement of breast implants is a highly personalized procedure with many variables to consider. What works for one woman won’t necessarily work for the next. Chicago breast implants surgeon Gregory Dumanian has compiled a short guide to the various breast implant options.
Filling Material
Dr. Dumanian offers saline and silicone gel implants. There are pros and cons to each type of implant. For example, saline implants are filled after placement. Dr. Dumanian will insert the saline implant shell into the breast pocket and then fill it to the desired capacity. Therefore, saline implants can be placed through a smaller incision. Also, due to the nature of the saline filling, it’s easier to notice if the implants deflate. However, the downside to saline implants is that some surgeons and patients believe they do not look or feel as natural as the alternative.
Silicone implants offer a more natural look and feel than saline implants. They are less likely to ripple. On the other hand, they are pre-filled and require a larger incision. Also, it’s more difficult to detect a rupture or a leak in a silicone implant.
Size
Selecting the right implant size is a primary concern for many breast augmentation patients. Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (cc’s). Every 150-200 cc’s is equivalent to about one-and-a-half cup sizes. In general, implant volumes range from 120ccs to 850 ccs.
Some women want their implants to make a dramatic difference in their breast size. Others are seeking a more discreet improvement.
It’s important for a woman to consider her body type when selecting the size of her implants. Not everyone’s body is built to accommodate large implants. Women with less natural breast tissue and a small frame can achieve great results with a small implant.
Shape
Breast implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop. Round implants are circular and project farther from the body. They offer more fullness in the upper portion of the breast. Also, if they rotate within the breast pocket, it is not very noticeable. Teardrop implants are more anatomically correct, with a gradual downward slope. If they rotate within the breast pocket, the breast may look distorted.
Texture
Breast implants may be smooth or textured. Smooth implants can move more freely within the implant pocket for a more natural movement. Textured implants are designed to stay in the proper position within the pocket.
