Dr Doumanian did a great job with my umbilical hernia repair. I am thrilled with the cosmetic result. The recovery was easy with no scarring. He is also a very nice man who patiently addressed all of my questions and concerns prior to surgery. I would recommend him very highly.
Takes the time to explain everything and does an outstanding job great follow-through
Dr. Dunanian and his entire staff, especially his nurse Katie, are awesome. Dr. Dumanian listens well and is a very competent surgeon. I had a complex ventral hernia caused when a previous hernia surgery failed and caused a bowel obstruction that did not heal. My stomach was sticking out several inches and movement was restricted. Dr. Dumanian fixed everything. The surgery was not easy but pain was controlled and nurse Katie was an amazing support. It took several months to fully heal but it was worth it as my torso is back to normal and I feel fantastic!
I had a large ventral hernia (caused by a previous failed hernia surgery and subsequent bowel obstruction) that restricted my movement and made me look pregnant. I went to Dr. Dumanian because he’s an expert in complex hernia surgeries and he uses his own patented mesh. All I can say is that he’s awesome! Surgery was performed in November 2024 with no major complications. The repair feels rock solid, like nothing is causing this baby to bust open. In addition, I can move freely and my torso shrinked several inches. It was almost like a had plastic surgery done. Throughout the process, Dr. Dumanian and his nurse Katie were extremely supportive and helpful in answering all my questions. I feel great, look great and can move better. Thank you Dr. Dumanian, Nurse Katie and the entire team at Northwestern!
I can’t praise Dr. Dumanian and his team enough for making my surgical experience and outcome so positive. He performed an abdominal incisional hernia repair in October 2023 for a fairly large hernia that made me look 9 months pregnant on one side. My recovery was shockingly smooth, my pain was well controlled, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. In addition to his skill as a surgeon, Dr. Dumanian is very personable and has a pleasant bedside manner.
Dr. Dumanian is one of the few doctors I have seen that comes into the office, looked directly to me, ready to speak with me, ask questions and provide detailed explanations. It was cleared that Dr. Dumanian had already seen my chart and knew my health history, especially as it relates to my specific case. Thank you.

Dr Dumanian is the best, hands down. Excellent results for my full abdominal wall reconstruction after two others failed. Highly recommend.

Dr. Dumanian and his staff were absolutely wonderful! He and his nurses fully and patiently answered all of my questions pre- and post-surgery. Regarding the surgery, I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Highly recommend this practice.
Surgical Technique of TMR – Prosthetic Arms
Greg, Todd, Martin, David, Diego, Kristi and Harold,
I’m honored to write all of you together as a group. You might not all know each other but you’ve all been working together, through ROMP, to do something really incredible for Bryan Torres in Ecuador.
This is Bryan testing his new set of prosthetic arms. He is the FIRST PERSON in Ecuador to ever receive the Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgery and to use this type of arm technology. Helping him access this type of care would have never been possible if we had not involved some of the most innovative and leading experts in our field.
It takes a team to help a kid like Bryan and you are quite an All-Star team. Just this past Wednesday Bryan’s story made front-page news in (El Comercio) Ecuador’s most important newspaper.

I’d like to recognize each of you for the part you’ve played in making Bryan’s dream a reality.
Dr. Todd Kuiken – For putting ROMP in touch with Dr. Dumanian and for inventing Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR).
Dr. Gregory Dumanian – For inventing the surgical technique of TMR, for donating the procedure to Bryan and for teaching our Ecuadorian surgeon colleagues.
Dr. Diego Palacios – For hosting Dr. Dumanian and performing the surgery in Ecuador’s best private hospital, Hospital Metropolitano.
Governor Martin O’Malley – For climbing for ROMP and raising funds that have been directly applied to the costs associated with Bryan’s care.
Harold Sears – For leading the development of electric arm components in the field of prosthetics and for donating components and your valuable time in the fabrication of Bryan’s prototype prosthesis this July.
David Rotter – For being one of the leading experts in upper extremity prosthetics in our field and for donating your time and genius to fabricate Bryan’s current set of prostheses.
Kristi Turner – For being a leading expert in occupational therapy for individuals with upper limb loss and for developing strategies and tools for Bryan so that he may regain more independence and dignity in his daily life.
There are so many more people who have touched Bryan including the incredible ROMP team, our partners at FHM in Ecuador, and the other volunteers and practitioners who have played a role in providing Bryan the best care possible. I wish you all a beautiful weekend.
Sincerely,
D.K.

Peripheral Nerve Release of the Leg
I am experiencing some recovery in my peroneal nerve and knew that it would delight you to see what I can do. Beginning last July, I noticed the slightest movement in my toes. Progress has been slow and steady in the 8 months since then and now I am walking (mostly indoors, but also light yard work and excursions such as yesterday) without my AFO and without stumbling. I have a lot of movement in my middle three toes–none yet in the big toe or the small toe, the latter still looking “droopy”. However, the PT at the hospital where I work out has measured my foot with a dynamometer and watched me progress from 0-0-0 in January to 4-4-5 currently. I continue to exercise several times a week at our hospital’s Life Fit program. I had been walking 2 miles at 3.2 with my AFO. This week I experimented without the AFO. I am limiting myself to 1 mile at the same rate and it has gone fine. I notice some very slight swelling between my lower calf and ankle, but am not particularly concerned about that.
At any rate, I want you to know how well I am doing and how happy that makes my family and me. I am grateful for your care and for your ongoing concern.
With deep gratitude,
D. M.

Hernia Repair
Dear Dr. Dumanian,
Thank you for improving the quality of my life and giving me my independence. I had two abdominal hernias for 2 years as a result of surgery and treatment for cancer. My oncologist referred me to you for surgery once I was well enough. Other doctors at NU confirmed you were the best in repairing hernias such as mine. I had spent the last two years constantly pushing in my hernia in many disparate and embarassing circumstances, needing someone to be with me in case I was not able to push it in myself. I had to go the E.R. once because it was so extended and I was in so much pain I could not manage it. I read on cancer blogs of other women with hernias like mine. Many of them needed multiple hernia repairs because of repeated tears. You told me that you had an over 95% success rate, two years following surgery. In Dec. 2012 my surgery went perfect, hernias repaired. The pain meds were well planned and I did not experience pain. I had no complications. I was able to go to theater and leave my home within 2 weeks of the surgery, one week after discharge. I was off pain meds and walking in my house for 30 minutes by the third week. By the fourth week I was at the gym doing low impact aerobics.I am independent again and not worried about being in pain from the hernia. I appreciate being independent and free of pain because of you, your team at the Cosmetic Surgery clinic and in the in-patient unit of the hospital. I owe my life and the quality of my living to the professionals at Northwestern Hospital.
Sincerely,
C. B.
