Healing from a surgical procedure is different for everyone, and the experience varies depending on the specific procedure(s) performed and the individual. However, there are a few commonalities in the healing process. The first two to three days after surgery will be the most uncomfortable, and patients typically spend most of the time in bed or on the couch resting quietly. After that, discomfort significantly decreases and many patients are able to slowly return to their normal activities.
Here are several universal tips for healing from plastic surgery.
1. Prepare Properly
One of the most important things patients can do to recover quickly from surgery is to go into it in good shape. Patients who do not smoke, have a healthy BMI and generally enjoy strong physical health are most likely to heal from surgery quickly and without complications. It is also a good idea to prepare by eating nutritious meals, getting plenty of sleep, staying hydrated and avoiding anti-inflammatory medications in the weeks leading up to surgery.
Also, consider logistics like taking a few weeks off from work and arranging childcare and help with household chores. Making these arrangements ahead of time cuts down on post-operative stress and makes for a smoother recovery.
2. Hydrate Sufficiently
Surgery drains the body of fluids; it’s crucial to replenish with plenty of water during recovery. Chicken broth, Gatorade and Jell-O are also good hydration options.
3. Eat Lightly and Healthfully
Eating the right amount and types of foods is good for promoting a quick recovery. For the first few days after surgery, choose foods that are easy to chew, swallow and digest. Light meals like salads and soups are great options; fruits and green smoothies make for healthy snacks.
4. Be Realistic
Ultimately, the most satisfied patients are those who go into the experience understanding the realities. For example, the aftereffects of anesthesia can be disorienting at first, and mild pain, tenderness and/or numbness are common after surgery. Also, patients may look bruised and swollen during recovery.
However, these are all common side effects and will gradually subside. Oral medication will be prescribed to alleviate discomfort, and instructions will be provided to reduce swelling and bruising.
5. Be Patient
Everyone recovers at a different pace. It’s important to be patient and not rush back to work, school or normal activities. For some people, it may take longer for the body to feel ready to re-engage in daily routines and responsibilities.
Most patients take between one to four weeks off to recover, although this is highly personal and depends on the procedure that was performed.
