I had a number of surgical abdominal hernias, and Dr. Dumanian did an amazing job on reconstructing my abdominal wall. Before I saw him, I had been told that I was going to spend my life in pain and wearing binder. One year post surgery, I am finding myself able function like a person, able to lift objects, stand up without pain and the like. Dr. Dumanian helped me feel like myself again, and the incision areas even healed beautifully.
Dr. Dumanian is fantastic… he was warm and caring. Initially I didnt want to utilize him but I am so pleased with my results..best decision I have ever made!!
Seven years ago I had breast cancer for the 3rd time. I chose to have a double mastectomy. For reconstruction I chose to have breast reconstructed using the Tram method. This method uses the skin and muscle from the abdomen to recreate breast. It was a nightmare. My abdomen wound refused to close. It took months to recover with an open wound. Two more surgeries to try and close the wound. I also developed a small hernia from the surgery. I asked about repairing the hernia. I was told they would have to insert a balloon in my stomach. Blow it up for 6 months to stretch to skin in order to close the wound after surgery. I was told to just leave the hernia alone. Chances are it would never cause any problems. They were wrong. The small hernia grew into a large hernia. At one point it was wrapped around my bowels. I ended up in the emergency room of a local hospital. They did a c scan and saw the blockage. They were not equipped for this surgery. Too much scar tissue and a very complicated surgery. My GP is with Northwestern hospital. He referred me to Dr. Gregory Dumanian. Dr. Dumanian told me it would be a complicated surgery. But he was confident he could fix the hernia and repair all the scar tissue. Three short weeks later I am healing rapidly. He fixed the hernia and repaired all the old scar tissue. This man and his team are miracle workers. Where I had a roadmap of horrible scars is now one wound. I am ecstatic over the results of the surgery. Dr. Dumanian’s bedside manner is the best I have ever experienced. He listens to his patients. He and his team continuously checked on me during my hospital stay. Kept me posted with my progress and the next steps to my recovery. I highly recommend Dr. Dumanian. I would rate him as the most experienced, knowledgeably and competent surgeon in the Midwest.

The Best in bizz
I absolutely love Dr. Dumanian. He and his staff are the best he answered all my questions and made sure I knew everything I would be going thru. I had no surprises and everything was what he told me. I had no worries because he had me so prepared for my surgery.
I was extremely nervous about undergoing surgery, Dr. Dumanian was very friendly and answered every question thoroughly. I had a panniculectomy as well as a fleur de lis” abdominoplasty after a 150lb weight loss. My surgery was a success and I am extremely pleased with the results, Dr. Dumanian and his team did an excellent job. Dr. Dumanian is very caring doctor and if he didn’t make me feel comfortable and at ease I wouldn’t have had the surgery.
Dr. Dumanian is extremely knowledgeable and compassionate. My consultation put me at ease for my medical condition. Dr. Dumanian was very genuine, answered all my questions and concerns and explained the difference between meshes. His expertise made it very easy to schedule my medical needs in his care. Strongly recommend Dr. Dumanian.
I was referred to Dr.Dumanian by an orthopedic surgeon because of persistent nerve pain in my foot for over a year. Dr.Dumanian concluded that I had tarsal tunnel so he performed TTR surgery on my foot. Two months post-op and I have ZERO nerve pain and I’m back to walking without a limp! I truly owe feeling “human” again to Dr.Dumanian!!!! Thank you! 🙂
Dr. Dumanian and his staff is the best of ive ever been to. I had reconstructive hernia surgery and i highly recommend anyone that has to have this surgery to really consider him. He and his stuff are very qualified and know what they are doing. After the surgery they also check in on you and make sure not to send you home to early but also make sure everything is healing well and you are in good health. I couldn’t be more happier with the outcome of my surgery. Definitely the top in his field if not the top
Surgical Technique of TMR – Prosthetic Arms
Greg, Todd, Martin, David, Diego, Kristi and Harold,
I’m honored to write all of you together as a group. You might not all know each other but you’ve all been working together, through ROMP, to do something really incredible for Bryan Torres in Ecuador.
This is Bryan testing his new set of prosthetic arms. He is the FIRST PERSON in Ecuador to ever receive the Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgery and to use this type of arm technology. Helping him access this type of care would have never been possible if we had not involved some of the most innovative and leading experts in our field.
It takes a team to help a kid like Bryan and you are quite an All-Star team. Just this past Wednesday Bryan’s story made front-page news in (El Comercio) Ecuador’s most important newspaper.

I’d like to recognize each of you for the part you’ve played in making Bryan’s dream a reality.
Dr. Todd Kuiken – For putting ROMP in touch with Dr. Dumanian and for inventing Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR).
Dr. Gregory Dumanian – For inventing the surgical technique of TMR, for donating the procedure to Bryan and for teaching our Ecuadorian surgeon colleagues.
Dr. Diego Palacios – For hosting Dr. Dumanian and performing the surgery in Ecuador’s best private hospital, Hospital Metropolitano.
Governor Martin O’Malley – For climbing for ROMP and raising funds that have been directly applied to the costs associated with Bryan’s care.
Harold Sears – For leading the development of electric arm components in the field of prosthetics and for donating components and your valuable time in the fabrication of Bryan’s prototype prosthesis this July.
David Rotter – For being one of the leading experts in upper extremity prosthetics in our field and for donating your time and genius to fabricate Bryan’s current set of prostheses.
Kristi Turner – For being a leading expert in occupational therapy for individuals with upper limb loss and for developing strategies and tools for Bryan so that he may regain more independence and dignity in his daily life.
There are so many more people who have touched Bryan including the incredible ROMP team, our partners at FHM in Ecuador, and the other volunteers and practitioners who have played a role in providing Bryan the best care possible. I wish you all a beautiful weekend.
Sincerely,
D.K.

Peripheral Nerve Release of the Leg
I am experiencing some recovery in my peroneal nerve and knew that it would delight you to see what I can do. Beginning last July, I noticed the slightest movement in my toes. Progress has been slow and steady in the 8 months since then and now I am walking (mostly indoors, but also light yard work and excursions such as yesterday) without my AFO and without stumbling. I have a lot of movement in my middle three toes–none yet in the big toe or the small toe, the latter still looking “droopy”. However, the PT at the hospital where I work out has measured my foot with a dynamometer and watched me progress from 0-0-0 in January to 4-4-5 currently. I continue to exercise several times a week at our hospital’s Life Fit program. I had been walking 2 miles at 3.2 with my AFO. This week I experimented without the AFO. I am limiting myself to 1 mile at the same rate and it has gone fine. I notice some very slight swelling between my lower calf and ankle, but am not particularly concerned about that.
At any rate, I want you to know how well I am doing and how happy that makes my family and me. I am grateful for your care and for your ongoing concern.
With deep gratitude,
D. M.

Hernia Repair
Dear Dr. Dumanian,
Thank you for improving the quality of my life and giving me my independence. I had two abdominal hernias for 2 years as a result of surgery and treatment for cancer. My oncologist referred me to you for surgery once I was well enough. Other doctors at NU confirmed you were the best in repairing hernias such as mine. I had spent the last two years constantly pushing in my hernia in many disparate and embarassing circumstances, needing someone to be with me in case I was not able to push it in myself. I had to go the E.R. once because it was so extended and I was in so much pain I could not manage it. I read on cancer blogs of other women with hernias like mine. Many of them needed multiple hernia repairs because of repeated tears. You told me that you had an over 95% success rate, two years following surgery. In Dec. 2012 my surgery went perfect, hernias repaired. The pain meds were well planned and I did not experience pain. I had no complications. I was able to go to theater and leave my home within 2 weeks of the surgery, one week after discharge. I was off pain meds and walking in my house for 30 minutes by the third week. By the fourth week I was at the gym doing low impact aerobics.I am independent again and not worried about being in pain from the hernia. I appreciate being independent and free of pain because of you, your team at the Cosmetic Surgery clinic and in the in-patient unit of the hospital. I owe my life and the quality of my living to the professionals at Northwestern Hospital.
Sincerely,
C. B.
