Pregnancy and breastfeeding are joyous for many women, but these experiences take a toll on the body with permanent changes to the breasts. Women who are finished breastfeeding may struggle with losing the voluptuous, youthful breasts from their pre-pregnancy life. Moderate to severe breast ptosis (drooping) is normal after breastfeeding. Breast lift with Dr. Gregory Dumanian in Chicago can restore perky breasts after breastfeeding.
Breast Rejuvenation Procedures After Breastfeeding
Lactation changes the breast tissue to a denser composition, and milk flow may stretch the breast skin. When a woman weans her child and lactation stops, her breasts may settle into a lower position with less volume. Breast lift and breast augmentation are popular among mothers who are finished growing their families and are no longer nursing. These breast procedures improve flat, empty breasts in postpartum women.
Breast lift reshapes and elevates the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall for a firmer, more youthful look and feel. Dr. Dumanian removes the excess, stretched skin and will raise the nipple-areolar complex to a more youthful position. Breast augmentation inserts an implant under or over the pectoral muscle to restore volume in the upper portion of the breasts after breastfeeding. Breast enhancement with implants provides fullness and cleavage. Breast augmentation and breast lift can be combined for more breast rejuvenation that removes excess skin and restores lost volume.
Some women may opt for breast reduction after breastfeeding. Pregnancy and lactation cause the breasts to swell, and they may increase by several cup sizes. When lactation stops, the breasts may not decrease with the milk supply, leaving mothers with overly large breasts that may cause painful symptoms, such as back, shoulder, and neck pain.
Dr. Dumanian can determine which of these breast procedures will achieve your desired results during your consultation.
When to Have Breast Surgery After Breastfeeding
You will need to wait until you’ve completed breastfeeding, and the tissues have reverted to their normal state. This process may take six months as lactation stops and the breasts settle. Our plastic surgeon recommends women wait to have breast or body procedures until they are finished having children and are back down to a stable weight. Breast surgery does not affect the safety of future pregnancies, but having another baby will alter the breast tissues and cause further changes.
August is National Breastfeeding Month, and our office understands the sacrifices women make for their children. Breast surgery after breastfeeding can restore your pre-pregnancy bosom and boost your self-esteem. If you’re interested in breast lift or another breast procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dumanian.
