Gregory A. Dumanian, MD, FACS is the Orion and Lucille Stuteville Professor of Plastic Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Dumanian, better known as “Greg” to his students and colleagues, is an internationally recognized leader in peripheral nerve surgery, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), abdominal wall reconstruction, and surgical innovation. He pioneered key advances in TMR for the treatment of neuroma and phantom limb pain, helping establish it as a standard of care for amputees worldwide. His randomized clinical trial demonstrated that TMR significantly reduces residual limb and phantom pain in major limb amputees.
In abdominal wall reconstruction, Greg developed the concept of the mesh suture, translating biomechanical principles into clinical practice to improve fascial closure strength and improve surgical outcomes like Surgical Site Infection, Dehiscence and Hernia Occurrence. His work bridges engineering and surgery, resulting in multiple patents and international adoption of his techniques.
Greg has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles, 50+ book chapters, and over 180 national and international presentations. A frequent visiting professor and invited lecturer worldwide, he has received numerous honors for clinical excellence, research achievement, and teaching, including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons Research Achievement Award and multiple teaching awards at Northwestern.
Greg’s career exemplifies bench-to-bedside innovation—transforming surgical ideas into validated therapies that improve function, reduce pain, facilitate his colleagues’ practice of their craft, and advance reconstructive surgery globally.
On a personal note, Greg is the son of Armenian immigrants and an avowed Europhile. His wife Randa speaks five languages, is an MIT-educated engineer, and leads the company he founded, Mesh Suture Inc. Greg’s son, Adom, heads company operations, sales and marketing. His daughter, Zari, is a biophysicist who conducted the first preclinical studies on the Duramesh prototype, joining her father as co-author on early publications.
